Down and Dirty is a new work commissioned by the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival for clarinetist Jon Manasse and pianist Jon Nakamatsu. Manasse and Nakamatsu will be performing ‘Down and Dirty’ on San Jose Chamber Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve ‘CELEBRATION!!!’ concert.
Due to extenuating visa circumstances, the Balinese Gamelan Ensemble, Gamelan Gita Asmara, will not be able to join for the December 15 Seattle and December 16 Olympia programs. They will be rescheduled on a future program.
Replacing them on the second half of the program will be more music inspired by gamelan from the already scheduled wonderful ECM artists Kristin Lee, Michael Stephen Brown, and Svet Stoyanov – full program details are below.

In a program celebrating the birth centennial of the incomparable György Ligeti, enSRQ welcomes back pianist Han Chen to perform the composer's Études and iconic Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano. Also featured are mixed instrumentation pieces inspired by Ligeti’s continuing legacy: Wax and Wire from Viet Cuong, and Slipstream from Stacy Garrop.

In a partnership with CA Biennial Festival, this Chamber Music Tuesday features SFCM alumni ensemble L'Arc Trio in performance with students. The concert also features two new and exciting works by Bay Area composers Jonathan Bingham and Vivian Fung, as well as one of Ernest Bloch's greatest chamber music works. Fung’s piano trio Ominous Machine was written for the L’Arc Trio and the performance will be a world premiere. Emerging Black Composers Project winner Jonathan Bingham wrote his string quartet Pareidolia in 2022 for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.

Joseph Bricker (percussion) will be performing The Ice is Talking.
In a residency at Western Michigan University, Mary Elizabeth Bowden will perform the piano reduction of Trumpet Concerto with Professor Lori Sims in addition to putting on a masterclass for the WMU trumpet studio.
Although anchored by Beethoven’s vivacious “ Appassionata” Sonata, this program takes listeners on a grand musical journey across nearly 100 years of musical development — from France at the start of World War I to midcentury modernism and a thrilling work for prepared piano written at the dawn of the 21st century.

National Sawdust presents a new project featuring the World Premiere of 18 new works for solo piano, co-commissioned by Metropolis Ensemble and pianist Han Chen, celebrating the centenary birthday of Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006).
Each of the new works is paired with one of Ligeti’s renowned canonic piano etudes, in a recital performance by Han Chen. A diverse cohort of contemporary composers were invited to study Ligeti’s etude, go against the etude, or simply sit with the etude during the composition process. Together, all thirty-six works bring a new and imaginative interpretation on the original iconic etudes.

Hearts of Freedom - Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees Exhibition Opening at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.
“After the Vietnam War, Canada welcomed hundreds of thousands of refugees from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Many fled on makeshift boats to escape harsh conditions under the communist regime. Between 1979 and 1980, an estimated 60,000 refugees arrived in Canada, most of whom had endured days at sea and vicious pirate attacks. Canadians offered to sponsor their journey to Canada in response to the crisis.
Hearts of Freedom is a Canadian Southeast Asian Historical Research Project. This initiative stems from the desire of the Vietnamese, Laotian and Cambodian communities to preserve the history of their refugee experience and resettlement in Canada.”
