Girl from the 905

Girl From the 905 is a genre-busting presentation from a powerhouse operatic team working within their usual roles, but completely outside the lines. A classical score that rattles alive with electronic textures, performed completely raw and unfiltered by a classical trained soprano, rooted in an auto-biographical story of women living between the lines in a multi-cultural family, who come to accept and love themselves for who they are.

World Premiere of 'Lamenting Earth' with Nicholas Phan, Jasper String Quartet, and Myra Huang

Vivian Fung is collaborating with the Jasper String Quartet, tenor Nicholas Phan, and pianist Myra Huang, on the creation of a new song cycle, Lamenting Earth. The project is a half-evening length song cycle, approximately 30 minutes, for tenor, string quartet, and piano. The work centers around poet Claire Wahmanholm’s prize-winning poem “O,” which took second place at the Academy of American Poets’ inaugural Treehouse Climate Action Poem Prize. The poem is described by the judges as “an original and powerful evocation, using a single letter of the alphabet to name the wonders that are at risk of being no more…The voice is prophetic and unrelenting: a lament, an elegy, and a clarion call to action!”

Orchestre National Des Pays de la Loire performs "Earworms"

With unparalleled dramatic power, the Coriolan Overture will set the tone from the first chords of the score. Han Chen performs World Premiere of 'White on Black'

National Sawdust presents a new project featuring the World Premiere of 18 new works for solo piano, co-commissioned by Metropolis Ensemble and pianist Han Chen, celebrating the centenary birthday of Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006).

Each of the new works is paired with one of Ligeti’s renowned canonic piano etudes, in a recital performance by Han Chen. A diverse cohort of contemporary composers were invited to study Ligeti’s etude, go against the etude, or simply sit with the etude during the composition process. Together, all thirty-six works bring a new and imaginative interpretation on the original iconic etudes.

"Baroque Melting" European Premiere with Berner Symphonieorchester and Gemma New

Looking back at the history of music and creating something new on this basis – composers have often attempted this with great success. Igor Stravinsky, for example, used a kind of musical magic wand to touch music that was then covered with the dust of the archives. The Canadian Vivian Fung follows a similar path and melts together baroque sounds with contemporary tones in a "compositional water bath". Mendelssohn, the great rediscoverer of Bach, did not become baroque in his violin concerto, but created a score of "classical" elegance. Finally, Mozart, who, as is well known, greatly admired Handel's music, used the three-part form for his "Prague" symphony, which – what a wonderful coincidence – comes from Naples, the setting of Pulcinella-Ballets. Entirely in the spirit of the present, the New Zealand conductor Gemma New will rehearse these four works for Bern. She is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Principal of the Orchestra in Hamilton, Canada. For Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, she finds another counterpart alongside the Bern Symphony Orchestra in the young German violinist Tobias Feldmann.

Program:

Igor Stravinsky, Pulcinella Suite
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64
Vivian Fung, Baroque Melting - European Premiere
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Symphony in D major, K. 504
