Join the SDSU Concert Band, Wind Symphony, and Chamber Orchestra for our end of the semester concert. Composer Vivian Fung will join the Chamber Orchestra for performances of her music. The bands will features standards from the concert repertoire as well as new works.

John Adams took inspiration from the Minimalist movement to find his own voice in a solid-gold modern classic. Canadian-born composer Vivian Fung’s String Sinfonietta is a lively, dramatic piece, with a first movement loosely based on Balinese Gamelan tradition. Verklärte Nacht, Schoenberg’s seminal late-Romantic masterpiece, concludes this tour de force programme by the strings of the Orchestra.

Tonight we will also listen to a work by Vivian Fung, entitled String Sinfonietta. The composer herself talks about its strong connections with Chinese and Indonesian folk music. Patterns taken from exotic folklore in a synthesis with figurative melodic lines of individual parts produce an impressive and subtle form.
Utah Symphony cellist Matthew Johnson performs Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1, a work presumed lost until it was rediscovered in 1961 and now considered one of the greatest works for cello of the Classical era.
Also on this program are JUNO Award-winning composer Vivian Fung’s String Sinfonietta (2008), where you’ll hear influences from Chinese and Indonesian music, and British-born composer Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms (2009), a “meditation on loss, love, and life” (The Arts Desk) that was dedicated to the composer’s late mother.
