PATHÉTIQUE WITH GEMMA NEW

If there is one piece that has internalized the season's theme of "transgression" to the core, then it is Tchaikovsky's "Symphonie Pathétique". Lament and sadness are unmistakable in the first movement, and even the beautiful, tender second movement tells of unfulfilled happiness: as a waltz in the "wrong" 5/4 time, it perhaps symbolizes the pain of a social outsider who remained Tchaikovsky (as a cosmopolitan in Russia, as a Russian abroad, as a homosexual in bourgeois society) despite all his successes. Does the triumphant third movement even convey disgust at these successes? At the latest in the slow final movement, entitled "Adagio lamentoso", a feeling breaks through that we can probably all identify with at certain times: the irreconcilable lament about transience. The young New Zealand conductor Gemma New combines Tchaikovsky with two contemporary works: a concerto that Efraín Oscher wrote for the soloist Edicson Ruiz on his highly virtuoso double bass, which combines neo-baroque verve with Latin American rhythms. The orchestral piece "Baroque Melting" by the Canadian composer Vivian Fung also begins in a very baroque manner, only to soon (as the title suggests) "melt" in a variety of ways. Musical "transgression" has never been a greater pleasure! A pleasure that ultimately touches and invites reflection.

Program:
Vivian Fung, Baroque Melting for harpsichord and string orchestra
Efraín Oscher, Barroqueana Venezolana No. 4 for double bass and orchestra
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op. 74 “Pathétique”

"Baroque Melting" European Premiere with Berner Symphonieorchester and Gemma New

Looking back at the history of music and creating something new on this basis – composers have often attempted this with great success. Igor Stravinsky, for example, used a kind of musical magic wand to touch music that was then covered with the dust of the archives. The Canadian Vivian Fung follows a similar path and melts together baroque sounds with contemporary tones in a "compositional water bath". Mendelssohn, the great rediscoverer of Bach, did not become baroque in his violin concerto, but created a score of "classical" elegance. Finally, Mozart, who, as is well known, greatly admired Handel's music, used the three-part form for his "Prague" symphony, which – what a wonderful coincidence – comes from Naples, the setting of Pulcinella-Ballets. Entirely in the spirit of the present, the New Zealand conductor Gemma New will rehearse these four works for Bern. She is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Principal of the Orchestra in Hamilton, Canada. For Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, she finds another counterpart alongside the Bern Symphony Orchestra in the young German violinist Tobias Feldmann.

Program:

Igor Stravinsky, Pulcinella Suite
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64
Vivian Fung, Baroque Melting - European Premiere
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Symphony in D major, K. 504

20-21_Recomposed_MWB5_web-banner.jpg

The WSO trumpet section is made up of some envious talent, and it’s with this in mind that we open this concert with Telemann’s Concerto for 3 trumpets and timpani featuring Chris FensomPaul Jeffrey and Isaac Pulford.

No stranger to WSO audiences, Canadian composer Vivian Fung offers her witty take on Baroque with Baroque Melting alongside Bach’s popular yet ambitious Chorale Prelude. Drawing inspiration from Haydn and other classical composers, Prokofiev weaves elements of the old and the new with his Classical Symphony. And we finish it all off with music from Stravinsky’s one-act ballet Pulcinella.
