From the intimate to the universal, The Song of the Earth by Gustav Mahler and Prayer by Vivian Fung transcend suffering and difficulties to give a voice to mankind. High in emotion, the works on the program evoke mourning, fear, hope and wonder.
Mahler is struck by a series of curses when he begins to compose his ninth symphonic work. One after another, he lost his daughter, his post at the Vienna Opera and his health. It is in this context that he delivers, on poems of Chinese origin, one of his most powerful and personal compositions, in which Quebec soloists Michèle Losier and Frédéric Antoun shine. Composed and created during confinement, Prayer transfigures the songs of Hildegard von Bingen.
